Bought used car - pulls to the left

I've just bought a used car (yesterday) and have only just given it a proper drive round. I've noticed it has an annoying tendency to always want to pull to the left (didn't notice on test drive).

Is it within my rights to take it back to the dealer and have them fix it? I assume it falls under "fit for purpose"?

Sounds like they haven't serviced it properly - wheels not tracked? Have you checked the tyre pressures?

Basically Yes. I got a dealer to take a car back after a couple of months due to an engine fault they couldn't fix. Be nice but firm. Advise them immediately even if you can't get the car into them today.

Lots of things affect the Start/Stop. I'd suggest giving a good long run after your pulling to the left issue is sorted. If the car has been on a forecourt for a while the battery will be very low and so probably below the threshold required for Start/Stop to work.

How long is a long run?

Done about 100 miles in it so far.

Start/Stop status is specifically saying "Battery charging" but it's been like that since I got it.

Edit - I've got a car battery charger at home - might hook it up to that.

Long run or not, you have found faults within hours of driving away. You have rights including taking it back for a full refund if they refuse to carry out the work needed to make good at no expense to you (unless they alerted you to the faults prior to shaking hands?).

100 miles non stop or short journeys totalling 100 miles? A good long run would help charge it or taking it out and putting it on a battery charger would do the same. If you have a multi meter try getting the voltage, a healthy battery should read from 12.7 to 13.2 volts generally speaking.

The battery should be covered given you've only just bought the car but advise them straight away, preferably by phone and email or letter so you have a record of when you advised them.

It looks like the V40 has an auxillary battery for the stop start function, not sure if yours will too so check the manual, looking at where it is located http://support.volvocars.com/uk/cars...a801e801f58ce2 it appears it could be damaged easily, also check it is physically present.

Also going off what Chef has said it would be advisable to take it back and tell them to sort it or refund you, quickly whilst you can argue you have not accepted the car.

tbh i'd have thought they'd have sorted all this prior to sale as it's fairly basic stuff.

I haven't met one dealer who'd do more then the bare fucking minimum.

My current car needed all its tyre pressures sorting and new oil after it had a so called full service before I picked it up and the dealer continued to lie to my face saying his mechanic thought there was nothing wrong with the clutch even after we'd agreed to knock £750 off the price of the car because the clutch was clearly fucked, massive slippage in third and it wouldn't go above 70mph.

Most of them (not all, but most) are not going to give any leeway unless pushed, and sometimes you have push them hard. Anything they have to do to the car is profit lost.

Sorted the pulling to the left thing now - they paid for 4 wheel alignment and that seems to have fixed it.

Going to keep an eye on the stop start and see if it's still not working in a few weeks. Might manually charge the battery too. I'll make sure to send an email as well as call if I do need it sorting so there's a paper-trail.

Don't think this guy's going to screw me round (been very co-operative so far). He's also a regular at my gym at the same time I go in the morning so it'd make things awkward for him if he had a pissed off me barking down his ear every time I saw him :p

Calling the dealer daily helped me get me a refund on a car, he can always change gym but he can't change his business number.

like others have said, stop/start needs a minimum charge, could be the battery is semi-fooked but give it a charge and see. you did mention this to him anyway i would expect just to have it logged as a possible concern in case it doesn't recover

4 wheel alignment? How do you align the back wheels?
