Yeah I don't want to oversell it! But as much as I liked the book the I also liked that the bloke who wrote it popped it up on his website to download for free, had to be talked by fans into putting it on the kindle store (which he did at the minimum price of 99 cents) and yet still ends up with a book and film deal and entirely minted four years later despite his best efforts. A good story in and of itself!

No idea what that means. It that a recommendation? I could do with some, I've started reading Dennis Lehane again.

No, that's cool. I started the series a few weeks ago as it happens, and found that 5 was out. But yeh.

Currently "reading" Ender's game on Audible. I love the 80s absence of PC vibe to it on top of the cool story

(taking a break from Listening to Sharpe )

Just wrapped up Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson. Very meaty book in terms of ideas and a wonderfully unique narrative perspective. A bit wishy washy in conclusion but well worth it for any fans of KRS's humanist science fiction.

just read The Invisible Library, first in a new series. Not bad, can tell the author is first time, good protagonist, has some potential. 59p on the kindle store, worth it if you like alternate world, steampunk-esque SF

Recently finished Death in the Afternoon by Hemingway which I randomly picked it up while at O'Hare and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Non-fiction about his passion for Spanish bullfighting.

It's obviously an emotive subject and knowing absolutely nothing about it when I started reading the book (other than a faint acknowledgement it seemed to be a cruel sport) - I do feel a little bit more understanding.

Irrespective of any moralising, there's a fascinating amount of history behind it and in particular the lives of matadors in its heyday of the 20s and 30s. It is split into four sections - about 20 chapters on various aspects, illustrations, an extensive glossary, and some anecdotes on peoples' first impressions of a bullfight. Hemingway's introductory chapter on why he first became an aficionado is really an excellent piece and worth a read even if you have no intention of reading the whole thing.

Just started Chirs Woodings' Saramyr books. I liked his Ketty Jay stuff a lot, and this one, is different, and enjoying it so far.

Love 'The Martian'. Amazing first novel.

Continuing with the audible theme that no one else is going with....

I need a recommendation for a couple of meaty sized books to maximise my value - any views?

I listen to loads of AB's on the bike. Actually even flip between the kindle and the earphones across books these days.

What sort of books?

Picked up a copy a while ago, I believe the 2nd book, The Masked City, is out soon? Holding off starting this as I'm hooked on Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series at the moment.

What sort of books?
The usual type that everyone on here reads

i.e. mostly Fantasy, sci-fi & a bit of horror. Although my listen through of Sharpe is a smidgen out of that field. But I could try others

Best value so far has to be "The Stand" which is like 50 hours of listening goodness

Earlier in this thread I mentioned the Man of War series by H Paul Honsinger. They're a cracking lump of reading/listening/whatever. If you want something far more serious look to anything Kim Stanley Robinson which were all rerecorded over the last year or so to coincide with the release of Aurora. the mars trilogy is long as fuck.

Modern (can't remember if you've mention reading them in the thread) - check out any audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton. He's basically been the go-to for current scifi releases including Ernest Cline and John Scalzi's recent books (Ready player one, armada / redshirts, Lock In etc).

It's not Sci-Fi or Fantasy, but The Son by Philipp Meyer is a great audiobook.

Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Big ideas and situations never quite being articulated in scale by the writing and characters. Maybe that's intentional.

Juicy low-fi spaceness anyway. It's not far from present day.
