Kali isn't a very good choice unless you're learning how to break things. If you're learning how to break things, packet injection could be problematic when it's run in a VM if your CPU doesn't have VT-d enabled.

It's good fun for hacking the wifi in range of the pub though.

Has the TX power issue been fixed?

Not sure which Tx power issue you mean.

The drivers were hard coded to only let you set the TX power up to 20dB. The paper specs say it'll do 35dB.

Not much point anyway, that's only Tx power. Rx only benefits from a better aerial. Unless you want to let people 10 streets away know that you're transmitting, I can't see the point, unless you're spoofing an AP.

If you're looking to learn for potential work, then Centos is basically RedHat so stick with that (you'll get enough in the way of basics of all distros anyway).

If it's for general use at home, aim for the more user friendly distros - mint, ubuntu etc. You could also invest in a raspberry pi if you want something separated from your day to day machine and run raspian (Debian for rpi)

Word of warning....

If you're looking for the answer for something, make sure you've read the man pages and spent some time scowering forums etc before posting on one of the many "help" forums... they can be quite savage at times.

One of the most useful tutorials you will ever go through as a beginnner:

Vimtutor

If you're looking from a work perspective, then... some cool things to check out once you get the basics:

Python
Ansible
Docker (containers)
There's loads

Decided to go full retard, and just install Mint on a laptop, instead of using a VM in windows. Going to try & install the Kali tools using Katoolin.

I have absolutely no pretensions that I'm nothing more than an interested amateur, and this will probably never benefit me in a professional capacity, but I find it fun. Kind of like the early days of ADSL when nobody gave a shit about security, and you could pull all the intrusion attempts from Zonealarm, import them into GFI Languard, and scan for (and find a fuck load of) shares.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? Would advise against charging out and playing with the kali tools on the intertubes.

Get thee to vulnhub and grab the ISOs to practice on.

Nah, certainly not from my bit of string at home, anyway. This is just a bit of fun with wifi vulnerabilities and shit.

Cheers for the vulnhub idea though, that's new to me.

I've got a house full of old routers and shit. I'll probably start with setting one up with WEP encryption and seeing if I can hack that, then move on to fake AP hacks & shit, to see what it looks like from the "inside". I'm sure some of them must be vulnerable to WPS attacks, so I'll have a fuck around with that too.

It's just a bit of fun tbh.

Breaking WEP is no harder than tuning your car radio and listening for five minutes. Try wifite, it comes with Kali and is mostly automated. It didn't seem to support 5GHz networks last time I used it, but that won't be a problem with WEP.

Yeah, had a fiddle with that. Fluxion is cool as well, it's an automated fake AP attack.

I agree, it's great fun.

Last summer I took a drive and managed to get a good 8-12 WEP network keys with wifite. It's surprising how many crackable networks are still out there, and where they turn up.

I've not have much luck with anything but airmon-ng suite. Wifiphisher promises a lot, but has yet to deliver for me. Wifite is ok, but airmon-ng will give you a better grasp of it. Also: Don't bother with WEP, as above.

Edit: wifi pineapple is also a bit lame, I feel. Might be using it incorrectly though, the whole thing just seems a bit meh. For the cost. Have had more luck with twin usb Ath for evil twin etc.

We're chucking away (literally) a handfull of old PCs tomorrow, just Dell Vostro 200s, and a couple are quite tidy, so I'm thinking about snaffling one, bumping the RAM up to 4gb and shoving a few old 250gb drives that are scheduled for disposal in it. No other reason than I thought I might build a Linux "server" to sit in a corner of my office, doing "stuff".

What "stuff" might I want it to do, and what would be the best distro? Mint still, or something a little more "vanilla"?

A whole 4Gb eh? The world is clearly your oyster.

Without wishing to appear rude, why don't you stop pissing about with shitty hardware and just get something good? Linux isn't the ant's foot that it used to be, unless you want to build an Arch kernel yourself.

In other news, wifite has just had a complete re-write, so check it out.

Well my 12 core watercooled box is staying Windows for the forseeable, so I just thought I'd see if I could put some of our old scrap to goodish use. Even if it's just a secondary media server to save some load when I'm rendering on the main PC. Just some suggestions for projects basically.

A torrent box/media server with btrfs or zfs would make an interesting toy.
