I’m at a bit of a loss as to what’s the matter here, but I can see why if you’re a Canary-reading simpleton you might let yourself get excited. She’s observed a conflict and recused herself.

That its a stretch to imply this is a real conflict of interest or at least more meaningful than the myriad that a politician by definition will need to stumble through (the fact most of them are landlords is far far worse). There are lots of things produced in the UK that the public can't their hands on due to legislation etc, which would fall into similar categories (guns, medicines, pure ethanol, fertilisers etc).

If she hadn’t recused herself, there would be a massive conflict of interest given that her husband (and via her husband, herself) stood to profit from the regulation.

As she did recuse herself, that article really is a nothing piece of writing, made to make her look bad.

It’s perfectly sensible but of course no one with even modest ambitions of ever winning an election will go anywhere near telling old people with assets that they might have to make a contribution to their care costs.

I wouldn't go as far as perfectly sensisble, but I agree that it's political suicide after the last election campaign.

It's certainly more sensible than introducing a further rise in income tax or an additional hypothecated income tax, which has gained traction in parts following the winter crisis.

Meanwhile in Italy, Five Star and the League have finally decided on a Prime minister. A complete unknown to politics, Giuseppe Conte.

I mean, it's not quite as bad as allowing Russian and Neocon interests to critically influence a national referendum and cause billions of pounds of economic damage and crushing damage to UK world influence for a generation to come using only some free facebook accounts and MS Paint but it's pretty close.

So I did a little reading and it's quite interesting what the new government is planning to do. Their 7 step program to Italian success appears in essence to be:

1) Spend a load of money they don't have on social programs, infrastructure, etc.
2) Turn round and ask the ECB to issue some bonds to pay for it.
3) Act wholly unsurprised when the ECB says no.
4) Print their own zero coupon bearer bonds to pay for their spending instead.
5) Act wholly unsurprised again when people point out they just re-created the Lira.
6) Act wholly unsurprised yet again when the Eurozone implodes as a result.
7) Celebrate exiting the Eurozone without having to do a tedious referendum or any actual exiting.

The only UK coverage I can find of this is in the Telegraph (unfortunately paywalled).

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business...rmed-uprising/

Edit: Already causing wobbles in the FOREX markets.

Yep. The 18th century bunch of fundamentalist cunts will use May to block any reform, such as abortion rights etc. NI couldn't be any worse if ISIS were running the show.
