Working in recruitment

Almost without exception, the cunts who call me from recruitment agencies don't have a fucking clue about IT, or are utterly unable to reconcile a CV against the requirements of the post, and are reading out the job spec' with no idea of what the words actually mean.

Is recruitment as cunty a career as it seems from the outside, or should I approach a few agencies as an "expert IT recruiter"?

Working as a recruiter myself there are unfortunately, a lot of agencies that give the industry a terrible reputation. The same is true in any industry, but more so in recruitment than any other.

I’ve worked both internally and for an agency, and the only real advice I can give is to sort wheat from chaff. Work out which are good and which aren’t, who actually listen to you and discuss the market rather than launching in with the usual ‘what rate/salary/location are you looking for?’ Before any real talks take place.

I was approaching this from a "should I approach any recruitment agencies with a view to working FOR them".

I did exactly that in '84 when I was between jobs, went to see a consultancy where a mate from college was working, and they offered me a job there... stayed for 6 months, was good but I missed the hands-on tech side.

It is essentially a sales job so you do need people skills. Not saying that you don't have them, just saying that I've not seen them

I worked (VERY successfully) in sales, both telesales and retail, from 17 until 30ish, and a lot of what I've done since then has required a lot of the skills I learned in sales and customer service. I only call someone a cunt if they are one and if all other avenues of communication have been exhausted.

tl;dr

I'm a fucking awesome salesman (I actually am, for once I'm not kidding)

It starts off as a sales role, but soon turns into a relationship/networking job. Provided you’re not a complete twat the job becomes pretty easy the longer you’re in it.

1.To perform an amazing act without witness.
2.To have the worst of luck when playing in groups, although having the best intentions an act occurs which usually results in multiple deaths, maimings or destruction of property.

I've left hands-on IT stuff (software) a couple of times and I found it bloody hard getting back into it. I've been out two years now and I'd imagine the world is a hell of a different place, especially at my age.

if you are going from an IT role paying a decent wedge then it might be a bit of a shock tbh, lower salary and commission i guess and the pressure of doing all that sales malarky to start with before you become le crem like goose. lots of the recruiters churn through their new staff

if you're bored where you are, why not re-write your cv and bang it out there and see what different roles come your way, don't you like the IT challenge anymore or you defo up for something more non-technical?
