Just been reading on Eurogamer too... I didn't pre-order, but would love to try one out before lashing out some cash!

Madness to buy any of this stuff at launch I think. Would give it 6 months and see if people are still on the hype train.

I expect to see some (hopefully?!) on CEX. Having said that, the DriveClub VR video I saw on Eurogamer has me completely sold (these seem to be perfect for sim-type games)
Rez Infinite looks like a blast with VR too.

Driving games sound ace and EG did a good feature this week. The main issues I think are motion sickness and visual quality.

VR does work well in driving games - it's like you're actually in the car. Similarly space games like Elite.

On the Vive it also works well where you have limited amounts of movement, but there's a problem in something like an FPS where your character would walk or run for miles, but obviously you wouldn't - apparently this confuses your brain and makes you feel sick.

I'd like to see them try something where the character was in a wheelchair or on a Segway or some kind of moveable platform or hoverboard.

Not sure how easy a sell WipeOut Paralympics would be to the publisher but fingers crossed!

Just noticed the games go up for pre-order on the PS Store. I haven't really delved much into what they have to offer, but surprised that quite a few of them are at the 30-60 range.

I thought we were still in the glorified tech demo days. Or are we starting to get fully realised VR games now?

This game Farpoint on the PSVR seems to manage FPS pretty well.

Some footage from Batman Arkham VR - I think this is more of an experience, rather than a full game.

Raw Data and Vanishing Realms show good FPS play in (Vive) VR. Both use the teleport system to move around the level, and you can then move in your little spot at that point.

I've only done 2 levels in Raw Data, which are point contained areas rather than part of a continual moving world, but they are large enough to move around beyond just your own room. Incidentally, I appear to be shit at VR fps as I can't get past the second level. The levels can have a lot of enemies at once and are high-octane experiences.

Vanishing Realms is a large-world game where you keep moving through the world. It works well, you've got a sword or a bow. Enemies are more limited.

VR suits the current cover-based FPS mechanics of a lot of typical games. In games like GoW you dash between static cover points anyway, so the "teleport" mechanic isn't too different. Raw Data has a multiplayer mode which I've not tried, but I'm interested to see how multiplayer might work.

PS VR looks like its going to encourage big franchises and bigger budgets to invest in VR. I also really liked the "co-op" games they showed taking advantage of the different TV and VR screens, for Crystal Maze style games. I'm hoping these games will come to the PC as well.

On a standard model and first experience with VR. I love it, but at the same time you can accept that it's more of a preview of the future. You can feel it's limitations, but when the experience clicks into place, it's pretty surreal.

Games wise - works best when the gameplay is close up or at medium distance. Games that have tried to concentrate on finer detail in the distance can be a bunch of pixels and a strain to play. So it's a mixed bag in terms of what works and what doesn't. VR Worlds for example - London Heist, Ocean Descent and Danger Ball are fantastic, Luge and Scavengers Odyssey I struggled to finish a level.

Happy I got it, but if I'd tried it beforehand, it probably would have been "this is brilliant, but I can wait a few years". Give it until the 2nd or 3rd generation and you can just tell that VR will be incredible. When the lens resolution get to 4k and up, when the field of vision gets to 180 degrees and when the hardware becomes streamlined (with everything going wireless over the years, it's a bit jarring that the living room has once again becoming cacophony of wires).

So it's great, but it will be better

I bought one at launch and love it. I find it's best use is the likes of additional VR support to big games such as Resident Evil 7 (VR in this is immense!) and Dirt Rally. I hope more major titles add VR support in future as I can't see many VR exclusive big hitters coming out any time soon.

Hopefully they're all doing enough to at least keep the ball rolling on investment and development. Now that I've tried it, it seems insane to imagine Steam, Facebook or Sony deciding to give up on VR. Even if it's soaking up high cost/low return for the next few years, you can definitely see the holy grail just around the corner if they keep pushing forward.

RE7 seems to be well suited with its smaller spaces and confined environment. With the likes of upcoming Farpoint and Gran Turismo VR (one of the big selling points for convincing myself to get one), I wonder if they might struggle to hit the same levels since they have to rely more on distance. Also curious how much the experience with the existing hardware can be optimised over time, whether there are ways to improve graphical fidelity, reduce motion sickness (I haven't had any) etc.

Do you need the move controllers with it? They really put me off - needing line of sight to the camera for tracking....

Unfortunately there isn't a huge amount that utilise them, which is a shame because it works at its best when they are being used. Seeing my hands in VR for the first time was quite a thing For the extra 80, thought I might as well get the full setup.

Definitely gonna need to get a charging station or something though. Annoyingly, the Move controllers use different charging cables than the regular controllers. So have 5 usb devices for 2 usb ports (1 needed for VR, 2 Playstation Controllers and 2 Move Controllers). So currently needing to work out what needs charging and when.
